Puran Singh Fartyal represents the Lohaghat constituency of the Champawat district in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. In 2017, he was elected as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party against the Congress party's Khushal Singh. He won the elections by just 834 votes. He represented the Lohaghat Assembly constituency in 2012 also. Even among his own party members, things have not been easy for the MLA. The BJP sent a show-cause notice to Fartyal in September 2020, accusing him of "tarnishing the image" of the Trivendra Singh Rawat government and the party organisation by submitting an adjournment motion in an Assembly session. Fartyal had criticised the state government's decision to re-allocate the Tanakpur-Jauljibi (TJ) road-building work to the same contractor who had been blacklisted in 2017, accusing Rawat of not listening to him.
